Exeter is in Devonshire in southwest England. Exeter is the capital of Devonshire and its center of culture, religion, and education as well as tourism.

The Romans founded Exeter around 50 AD and left about 400 AD, at which time Exeter came under the control of the Saxons. In 876 AD, the Danes occupied Exeter for a short time after which the Normans and William the Conqueror took control. The ancient Norman towers they built can still be seen around Exeter.

With its location on the Exe River, Devon became a trading port, because of its proximity to the English Channel. A dam was built across the river in 1280, so sea vessels could no longer get through, but in the 16th century a ship canal was constructed, once again opening up access to the sea.

Exeter is full of history and character, making it an excellent choice for a holiday or just a short break. It is only a 5-mile train ride from the Exeter airport and its location also makes short jaunts to the beaches on two coastlines easy to make.

There is so much to see in Exeter, which is sometimes called "Cathedral City". The Normans built Exeter Cathedral in the 11th century and its size and beauty dominate views of the city. An intricate piece of sculpture called a boss that helps hold the ceiling in place in the cathedral shows the murder of Thomas Becket.

The Norman influence is not all that can be found in Exeter. Remnants of the city wall that the Romans built are still intact, and there are underground passages that take you through some of the city's aqueducts where you can see the work of the Romans.

Guildhall, which is Exeter's municipal building, dates back to the 14th century. A visit to St. Nicolas Priory, a Benedictine priory that is over 1900 years old, is a perfect example of the way the Normans lived during the time of William the Conqueror.

There is more to see and do around Exeter than soak up history, however. One neighborhood known as the Quayside was Exeter's original port area. Today, the streets are still cobbled and it is pedestrian only. The area is famous for its shopping and restaurants.

Dunsford Wood outside of Exeter is a great place to get away from the city for a little relaxation. A series of nature trails meander along the river, through stands of oak and ash tress, and into lush meadows scattered with flower.
